The Current
Music Scene
Ireland
today is a melting pot of musical styles. The
resurgence of Irish traditional music has produced many highly-respected
musicians, such as the pipe-players Liam O' Floin and Paddy Keenan from
Dublin. Groups like the Chieftains and the Fureys have gained world-wide
fame by meddling old with new. Ireland is also firmly placed on the rock'n'roll
map, thanks to bands such as Them in the 1960's and Thin Lizzy a decade
later.
The most famous rock
band to come out of Ireland is Dublin's U2 who, in the 1980's became one
of the world's most popular groups. More recently, the series of albums
entitled A Woman's Heart has been a showcase for talents such as
Mary Black and Sinead O' Connor (of 'Nothing Compares To U' fame)
and bands like The Cranberries and Boyzone have conquered the world stage.
