History Of Irish
Music
Ireland
is famous for its love of music and although modern forms such as country
music, western and rock flourish, it is the traditional music that captures
the essence of the country. Whether you are listening to Gaelic love songs
that date back to medieval times or 17th and 18th century folk songs with
their English and Scottish influences, the music is unmistakably Irish.
One of the few men
who made a great contribution to Irish music was Turlough O' Carolan who
was a famous harper. The blind musician travelled the country by playing
songs to both rich and the poor. Many of O' Carolan's melodies such as
The Lamentation of Owen O' Neill, still survive. Another great contributor
was John McCormack whose best -loved recordings were arias by Mozart.
One of the popular singers was Josef Locke who was famous for his ballads
in the 1940's and 1950's.
