Local Currency
The
unit of currency in the Republic is the punt (IR£), often called
the Irish pound. It is divided into 100 pence (p). Though there are no
restrictions of bringing currency into the Republic, you cannot take more
than IR£ 150 in banknotes out. However, you can take out the same
amount of foreign currency as you bring in, upto IR£ 1200.
The currency in the
Republic is different from the currency in Northern Ireland. When travelling
between Northern Ireland and the Republic, there is no shortage of money-changers
- official and unofficial - in towns on both sides of the border. However
for the best exchange rates, avoid shops and petrol stations and use the
bureaux de change or the banks.
