The
bus services throughout Ireland are quite good. The Republic of Ireland's
national bus company, Bus Eireann, operates a country-wide network of
buses serving all the cities and most of the towns In Dublin, the main
bus station is the 'Busaras' on Store street, which is a short walk from
O'Connell Street. There are also numerous private bus companies which
either compete with the national network or provide services on non-covered
routes. The long distance buses are about half the price of the equivalent
rail journey. For those who intend to do a lot of travelling it is cheaper
to buy a "Rambler" ticket which allows unlimited bus travel
throughout the Republic for a certain number of days in a set period e.g.
15 days' travel out of 30 consecutive days.
Except in the most
rural of places, there is usually a local taxi service. In Dublin, taxis
are huge saloon cars. Cruising taxis are a rarity; the best places to
find cabs are at rail or bus stations, hotels and taxi ranks. Prices are
based on meter mileage. If your taxi does not have a meter, always ask
the fare to your destination.
